Mass Privacy Law: How Does it Impact Me?
Our upcoming newsletter is dedicated to how the new Mass Privacy Law impacts you and your company. The law is titled 201 CMR 17:00 and it officially took effect March 1st of this year after several stalls.
Massachusetts has implemented a privacy law that can be considered the toughest in the country...hooray! Not so fast—much of the law moves the burden to protect from identity theft and credit card fraud to each and every person in the Commonwealth. I am very much a proponent of getting those techie bad guys, but so far I don't hear or see businesses and individuals racing to us with questions on compliance.
Compliance is a great portion of the new law; it touches on many specifics that should already be in place to protect individuals’ private information. The law takes time to define what personal information is (PI) and how you must have a policy in place to protect and track it. It also states that you must follow a mandated procedure in the case of a security breach. Non-compliance will have consequences.
We are providing information to our clients so they are aware and understand the new law as it relates to technical accounting and personal information. As always thanks for listening!
